Western Washington Shop Hop 2014 - Shop Block Tutorial

Block Instructions

Cutting instructions for one block:

Cut a 1 1/8”  by 20” strip of the white fabric
Cut a 2 3/8”  by 20” strip of the main floral
Cut a 2 3/8”  by 20” strip of the yellow dots

Instructions:

Step One: Piecing the three strips together into one 4 7/8" unit.
Sew the long 20” side of the main floral to the long 20” side of the white strip.  Sew the long side of the yellow strip to the other side of the white strip.  Now you should have a 4 7/8” strip.

Step Two: Cutting the strip into four sections.
Cut the strip into 4 squares 4 7/8”x 4 7/8”.

Step Three: Cut squares in half diagonally. Two squares to the right and two squares to the left.

You will cut these squares once along the diagonal.
Cut two of the squares in one diagonal direction and cut the other two squares in the opposite diagonal direction.

Step Four: Rotate half-square cut triangles
Rotate your half square triangles any way you like

Step Five: Sew triangles along the diagonal to create 4 new squares.

Sew the 8 triangles together along the diagonal lines to create 4 new squares.
After sewing the squares should measure 4 1/2”.

Step Six: Sew all 4 squares together.

Sew the 4 squares together to create your completed block.
Your block should now measure 8 ½”.

Make another block with a friend!

To make the pinwheel style block:  Grab a Shop Hop buddy!

Use your squares from step 2 and make 4 diagonal cuts ONE WAY while your friend cuts their four blocks into 4 diagonal cuts the OTHER WAY.

Swap one set of four half square triangles with each other!
Use these opposite cuts to create a pinwheel effect in the middle of your block.

Hexagon Trivet Tutorial

Materials:
1 teeny pack
1 pc Insulbrite, about 9” x 9”
Coordinating thread

Instructions:
1. Choose one of the 5 fabrics for the center hexagon.  You may want to “fussy cut” to get a specific part of the fabric in the center of the trivet.  (Remember to allow at least 3/8”of fabric on each side for the seam allowances.)
2. Cut 3 of the remaining fabrics into 1 ½” x 10” strips.  *You may want to cut as you go as you may not need the entire piece of each of the fabrics.
3. The remaining fabric piece is for the back of the trivet.
Stitch your fabrics using the template provided.  If you are new to foundation paper piecing, here are a few websites with great tutorials:
5. Once your top is pieced, carefully remove the papers and press.
6. Place the pieced hexagon and backing fabric right sides together.
7. Lay the piece of Insulbrite against the wrong side of the backing.
8. Stitch around the pieced top using a ¼”seam allowance, leaving a 2 ½”-3” opening on one side.
9. Trim the backing/Insulbrite to the same size as the top.
10. Turn the piece right sides out and slip stitch the opening closed.
11. Quilt as desired!
